However gulls are absent from tropical Southeast Asia—only a few species occur as rare migrants and none are resident. Terns are well represented and at various locations are quite plentiful. There are two types of terns—the powerful members of the Sterna genus (also known as sea terns) and the smaller, delicate Chlidonias terns (also known as marsh terns).

The Plaintive Cuckoo prefers a habitat of open woodlands, disturbed forest edges and cultivated areas, but can also be found in mature village gardens. It feeds on insects and other invertebrate prey and sometimes on small fruits. This cuckoo is somewhat anonymous in appearance and behavior, but like other small cuckoos it has a very distinctive call—a mournful, monotonous whistle. It lays its eggs in the nests of other smaller birds, parasiting on their parental efforts. The cuckoo is often mobbed on its perch during the day by these smaller birds.

Sepulcralis, which is more of a forest bird, with a rust-colored breast and throat and a distinct, yellow eye-ring.
