Each of the two parts leads with an academic discussion and analysis of the said region’s development, and how the local institutions have shaped, and continue to shape, economic development. The final chapter of each part is a narrative case study of the area. The narrative style of Chapters 4 and 6 is meant to be an engaging and enlightening read, not only bringing these two diverse regions to life, but also emphasizing their variations, and the influence of local actors. The book’s conclusion takes up the academic debate again to explore the empirical and theoretical implications of this study.

As early as 1980, nonagricultural activities had already overridden agriculture in the Shanghai suburbs and in Wujiang, whose agricultural production accounted for only 34 percent and 24 percent of total production, respectively. In comparison, industry and construction accounted for more than 60 percent of total social product in this region. 4).
