If gas is burned with an excess of air, the resulting atmosphere will be ‘oxidising’. The oxygen not used for combustion is then available for use in combination with the surface of the material. If there is a lack of air, the atmosphere will be ‘reducing’. Because there is insufficient oxygen to burn the gas, it will try to get some from elsewhere and if metallic oxides are present in the material within the furnace, it will remove the oxygen from them. There are industrial processes in which this is a desirable effect.
If the surface cools the gases in the flame to below their ignition temperature, some of them will not be completely burned and may be released as incomplete combustion products. The effect can be particularly bad if the inner cone of a pre-aerated flame is ‘broken’ by the cold surface. This is because this inner cone contains unburned gases. Chilling can also result if the flame is exposed to a stream of cold air or to a draught. This may also tend to lift the flame off the burner. If the flame is under-aerated and yellow-tipped and touches a cold surface, soot will be deposited and, if the conditions are not corrected, the deposit will continue to grow, causing more interference.
It is a requirement of the codes of safe practice covering LPG, including those published by the Health and Safety Executive, that all concerned with LPG are familiar with its properties and any hazards arising from incorrect use.
