Peter the Great shifted the centre of his nation once more, this time to the northern Gulf of Finland. The construction of St Petersburg as a ‘window’ to the West marked a reorientation – both practical and symbolic – of Russian space. Ideology was mapped onto geography – the so-called modernization of the nation was to be achieved by a spatial re-mapping. Similarly, the decision of the Soviet leadership, in 1918, to shift their Socialist capital back to Moscow, was a rejection of the Imperialist space of St Petersburg, with its associations of workers’ oppression, and an attempt to appropriate a new capital – but one which nevertheless offered the symbolic armature of history as support.

Again this suggests eleventh-century Christianity, 28 simon franklin although the image is also readable simply as one of the most prominent local landmarks. The hryvnia note is altogether more ambitious and complex. Although the images are principally religious in origin, every effort is made to contextualise the images as ‘culture’: as culture conceived in a Soviet manner, as a sequence of ‘progressive’ phenomena, linked to wider advances in politics, technology, and construction.
