He sees it as a new perspective on a part of reality hitherto untouched by science, which enables questions to be asked and answers given that the framework of the mainstream sciences cannot accommodate. Nor, therefore, is their methodology adequate to its special requirements. In the heat of the NYRB debate, Nagel’s challenge is to demonstrate not only that psychoanalysis is scientific, but also that it is worthwhile; but how far he succeeds in this seems to depend on whether or not one was convinced in the first place.

As an antireductionist, he holds the view that the mental conception of reality cannot be reduced to the physical conception of reality. He believes that they are governed by different principles and different forms of explanation. Nagel’s position has specific implications for his current task. To reinstate psychoanalysis as an empirical science, he must demonstrate that it meets his ‘Freud’s Permanent Revolution’ 37 own conditions of realism and antireductionism. This means establishing the objectivity of psychoanalytic subject matter while distinguishing it from reality physically conceived.

Nagel has to show that sweeping away established scientific goalposts in favour of apparently subjective factors is not, as Crews suggests, a resort to ‘special pleading’. How can it be justifiable to suspend the normal scientific requirements of objectively definable subject matter and publicly observable testing? And how can his new criteria of ‘rational coherence’ and ‘intuitive plausibility’ be appropriately scientific? Both issues have to be resolved 40 ‘Freud’s Permanent Revolution’ if psychoanalysis is to meet Nagel’s own conditions for objectivity of realism on the one hand and antireductionism on the other.
