JOHNSON and HILTNER (1956) gave a revised calibration of the MK system. Their idea was to fit the observed cluster sequences in a colour-luminosity diagram to a single zero-age main sequence. They emphasise the necessity of fitting the observed main sequences at a sufficiently low part that one can be sure that no evolutionary effects have moved the stars from the presumed well-defined zero-age sequence.
