Query too often, and the author may become frustrated with the amount of time needed to read and respond to all your questions, comments, and explanations. " Query in a way that confuses or insults the author, and you are unlikely to obtain the cooperation you need to resolve the problem at hand. When to query. Not every change in a manuscript requires a query. Copyeditors do not query routine mechanical changes that are not subject to the author's veto or re-revision; thus you need not explain the reason for every added or deleted piece of punctuation or for every lowercasing of a word that the author capitalized.

To interrogate each pronoun ("Hey, pronoun, where's your antecedent? "), to cross-examine each homophone ("You there, 'affect'! "). Moreover, you must read slowly enough to catch missing words (a dropped "the" or "a"), missing pieces of punctuation ("We need a hyphen here"), ambiguities in syntax, and gaps in logic. On yourfirsteditorial pass through the manuscript, then, you will want to read as slowly as you can. To slow yourself down, read aloud or subvocalize. An added advantage of reading aloud (or muttering) is that your ear will pick up some discrepancies that your eye will ignore.
