These parents—who were positive, healthy, and influential—became great supporters of the schools' ESAPs. By challenging local attitudes that condoned underage drinking at student parties and by sponsoring alcohol- and other drug-free events to counteract this negative trend, the parents contributed greatly to the ESAP effort. The Morrow County schools found that educating parents was time and money well spent. Peer Counseling As high school and middle school students become committed to remaining free from alcohol and other drugs, they can be trained to educate elementary school students.
These programs were developed by business people who recognized that a systematic approach to their employees' mental health resulted in a more productive, stable work force. More than a decade ago, some educators began adapting this approach to the secondary school level, renaming it the Student Assistance Program. We propose moving it to the elementary school. As programs such as Head Start have shown, there is no better time to intervene in or even prevent the development of serious problems than in the early years of life.
