It has grommets on the corners which, as you will see later in the chapter, makes for a quick shelter. It measures a substantial 60x84 inches. I even carry one of these in the game pocket on the back of my Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser coat. They also make great ground cloths for under a shelter, or even as a reflector by the fire. Space also makes a Sportsman Hooded Blanket. This is similar to the All Weather Blanket, but has a hood and handholds in two corners. We did determine that although the packaging gives the same dimensions as for the All Weather Blanket, it is actually 59” x 69”.

In my fall and winter kits, I also carry a pair of Filson wool gloves, both half finger and full finger. When working around fire all the time, you will come to appreciate wool, as it doesn’t melt every time an ember lands on it. If your kit is large enough, I suggest a good pair of leather work gloves. They really help protect your hands when dragging logs, building shelters, etc. If the space is available, throw a pair in. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun, and can help prevent snow blindness.

A good survival kit should contain the items you need to avoid falling prey to hypothermia. You need to be prepared in order to protect yourself from the cold and effects of hypothermia. Hyperthermia Hyperthermia is elevated body temperature which occurs when the body fails at thermoregulation; and the temperature control system becomes overloaded. The body is normally able to cool itself through sweating, but under some conditions sweating is not enough and body temperature can rise rapidly. If the temperature continues to rise, it can damage the brain and other vital organs and result in death.
