The school was giving you money to party. This sounds like a hack that somebody figured out. I think it might have been. It lasted until about 2000, after I had already left, when someone at MIT drank himself to death. On campus during one of the parties, he died from alcohol poisoning and that is when they cracked down at Harvey Mudd. They stopped doing it; you had to have external bartenders, check IDs, have a beer garden, and all this stuff. So after that tragedy they really locked things down.
For me that was the decision point and it was an easy decision point because it had arisen naturally and it happened to coincide with a good time for GitHub, since Girhub was already making money, though not enough money to pay my salary the way I was used to. But it was a hard decision, and I have a blog post about this. Microsoft was offering me $300,000 over the course of three years, as a retention bonus, to stay there in addition to a pretty decent salary. So the question was, do I go and take a bunch of Microsoft stock and a bunch of money over the next three years and a good salary to work at Microsoft doing stuff that I don’t really care about that much, or do I quit and take the big risk to do GitHub which is making some money?
Has that changed? At first, I worked on the front-end and back-end and Chris did the Rails stuff. I would make UI mock-ups and either do them in HTML or just hand them to him and he would do the HTML and then I made whatever needed to happen on the back end and storing Git repositories and accessing them. So it was a really great feedback loop and then we were both trying to create stuff that the other person then had to implement. That just went back and forth, and it was a challenge to outdo the other person and say, “Hey, I made this up thing, now you have to catch up by implementing it,” or vice versa, and that is how we split up work initially.
