The section tracing a direct line ‘from Luther to Linz’, whilst daring scholars to produce an ‘accurate’ account of the pathway, is admirably met by Simmonds’ analysis of the misunderstood journey from Protestantism to positivism. Furthermore, Dworkin’s work is symptomatic of this mistaken history and, in utilising a cathected form of Protestant autonomy, runs the risk of suffering the selfsame tensile weakness exhibited in the irreconcilable aspects of Auden’s poem. Auden was also at that time infused with a faith in American claims to philosophical and political neutrality, and this may well have imbued the poem with its sense of the masses sincerely hurrying towards their ethical life.

Often Thomas’s poetry dealt with profoundly universal questions – the relation between body and spirit, between life and death, between beauty and ugliness of soul, between God and Nature, man and machine, personal and collective identity, and spirit and myth. Yet, at other times, the poetry can seem intensely narrow and parochial – in his zeal to preserve Welshness there is an identity between nourishment and corruption in speech (clearly there are many links here to WB Yeats, Seamus Heaney, Derek Walcott, James Joyce).

Most of all, his poetry is imbued – for all his claim to being ‘noone’, with a heavy presence of his ‘I’; and perhaps this is another reason for his less than Messianic impact. The ‘I’ is not merely a location of self but a negation of other. Though Thomas is without doubt a poet of great gifts, one may with relief conclude that the deeply troubled ‘self’ of Thomas, and of his message, undermines the Messianic potential. My interest in RS Thomas began first, of course, with his poetry, powerful, melancholy, spare; but being married to a Welshman who himself feels ambivalent towards the ‘meanings’ ascribed to his roots, and having moved to Wales and with my children learning Welsh and each of them feeling a great sense of romanticism and passion for the Welsh heritage, yet sometimes encountering anti-English sentiment at school, my relation to the poetry, which is very concerned with ‘Otherness’, became more complex.
