The destructive processes can be purely physical but also biologic (Fig. 3). Most of these sedimentological phenomenons can be used for an environmental interpretation similar to siliciclastic rocks. But estimates of current intensity need to be adjusted to the different density of quartz and apatite. The use of the terms "phosphate rock" and "phosphorite" was accepted by most authors and seems to be a helpful tool to differentiate phosphate-bearing rocks from more economically valuable phosphaterich sediments. The most popular definition for the two terms has turned out to be the 18 % P205 boundary, respectively 50 % phosphate mineral component, with "phosphate rocks" defining compostions < 18% P205 and "phosphorite" these of > 18% P205. This definition will be followed in this work. The kind of phosphate mineral is not specified.
