Having briefly explored the idea, preconditions for and objectives of mindful listening, we’re now going to go into more detail and use examples to help readers experience it themselves, at least in part. Of course, in this book we can only write about it and share experiences. Readers wanting to experience the effects of active listening for themselves must actually try doing it. The following section draws heavily on Carl Rogers’ and Richard Farson’s article on ‘Active listening’ published in the journal Communicating in Business Today in 1987.
Along with this ‘access to ourselves’, openness and impartiality are also needed in order to listen well. If my attitude is that I’m not interested in the concerns of the other person, that I don’t have time now, or that I know everything anyway, I’ll tend to close myself off to the other person’s messages and experiences, and downplay them. 36 Part I Theory and skills Openness to messages from other people, however, isn’t enough to allow for our understanding. If, for example, we mistrust the person or group with whom we are communicating, we’ll tend to reject the message rather than accept it, in order to maintain our own mental models and constructs.
The precondition for this is an inner world that is free from rigid constructs that would hamper perception. Hence, incongruence can happen in two ways. In the case of an inner incongruence, we don’t perceive ourselves accurately, for example, because of fear, anxiety, defence or protective mechanisms. So it might happen that disappointment doesn’t fit into the self-concept of a successful person and hence the perception of disappointment is ‘censured’ or distorted before it can unfold at all. In the second case, incongruence in expression, we perceive the inner state but refrain from expressing it transparently.
