By 1905 the groundwork for the major directions in movies and the modern psyche was in place. Experiments in perceptual psychology were underway. Freudian dream theories were working their way around the world, even though Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams would not be translated into English until the next decade.

Ironically, Freud himself had little time to attend theater. Yet he was familiar enough with the plays of Aeschylus, Euripides, and Sophocles to incorporate their insights into his theories. He acknowledged Shakespeare and Goethe, and he noted that poets were the first psychologists. In his 1919 essay The Uncanny, he wrote about marionettes (and perhaps even alluded to the Salzburg Marionettes that premiered near his native Vienna in 1913). Freud’s appreciation of literature and drama (as well as his own fine writing style and storytelling techniques) were rewarded when he received the Goethe Prize for Literature in 1930.

Zoogyroscopes became popular immediately. They recollected the “magic lantern” shows developed by a monk named Athanasius Kirschner in the mid-1600s. It is interesting to note that 1878—the year Muybridge began his photographic experiments—was the same year that physician-turned-psychologist Wilhelm Wundt founded the first laboratory for experimental psychology in Germany. Even though Muybridge’s photographic study had no direct connection to Wendt’s laboratory, it seems that photographic invention and scientific discovery were in the air in the 1880s.
