The average life expectancy of firms supplying hardware and software is probably less then the expected life of the system. Many suppliers are small, with a staff of around five people. If the firm is wound-up, maintenance of the hardware and software may prove to be a problem. In assessing a system, therefore, the likely level of support once it is operational must be taken into consideration. The support may be provided by the dealer who sells and installs the computer system and application package.

Most of their income comes from the specialist services, such as customising, training and advice, rather than the profit margins on the equipment. It is therefore important to find out that they will do a good job, and to demand references.
