Like the ‘songlines’ of Aboriginal mythology, Davies’s films sing into existence his and his city’s shared identities. In this symphonic Liverpool, certain key motifs recur (the ironic counterpointing of images and music, tender close-up shots of elderly hands and faces, long sequences of children at play, for instance), while thematic passages emerge, develop and modulate. The theme of time and memory is fundamental, shaped by the often discordant juxtaposing or overlaying of past and present, creation and decay, hope and despair; for if, as Davies suggests, the past seems irrevocably lost, the film demonstrates that it is still powerfully present in the remembered spaces of the city.

Every emotion the characters feel is sincerely earned; none more so than the two women sharing their tears in the auditorium. The Futurist was an upmarket cinema on Liverpool’s Lime Street that opened in 1912, and closed in 1982.
