While I cannot here begin to trace out the complex history of the forms of journalistic writing, I want to point out that trappings of letters still remain in the journalism industry as reporters posted in distant cities and countries are still referred to correspondents, even on television news. Further the by-line remains to identify noteworthy acts of correspondence. Remnants of personal correspondence style remain particularly in those publications that affect antiquarian elegance such as the New Yorker which still publishes lengthy reports with titles 24 CHARLES BAZERMAN such as “Letter from …” and maintains an informal letter style for the talk of the town column.
