That’s the sound of oxytocin, the sound of empathy. What makes you say, “Awww”? Write a scene that would do that to you, and you can know without doubt that your reader will instantly engage with that hurting character. Vice and Glue Your first job in a novel, as we’ve seen, is to catch your reader’s attention. But really, that’s just the carnival barker making you stop and not pass by. The real objective is to get your reader to come inside and become a customer. With fiction, the real goal at the outset of your novel is to forge a bond between your reader and your protagonist.

Indeed, if David fights Tiny Tim, he’s the villain in that story, not the hero. But throw an avalanche at him, and he’s not only the hero, he’s the underdog, and now we can’t not watch. To hack your reader’s brain, you must conjure dragons. That same knight, faced with a fire-breathing monstrosity that just demolished the strongest castle in the realm, becomes “our guy” in this struggle, and we’ll watch very, very carefully to see what happens. Especially if you’ve done your job of bonding us to this knight so we not only pull for him but also feel as if we are him.

It doesn’t have to be just physical danger, by the way. Emotional danger or psychological risk work just as well. If you write a scene in which a teen girl goes to a dance party with a boy who thinks she’s wonderful, and then a boy she knew at her previous school—who knew all about the reputation she’s trying to leave behind—arrives unexpectedly and is surely going to spot her and undo the new life she’s building for herself, so she jumps behind a large fern as he nears…your reader will read and read until you get her out of that pickle.
