In some instances a pseudarthrosis, or “false joint,” develops as a result of a nonunion. A number of reasons can be found for why fractures do not heal. Excessive motion, infection, steroids, radiation, age, nutritional status, and devascularization locally are all causes of delayed healing. The two most common types are hypertrophic and atrophic nonunions. Hypertrophic nonunions possess the biology but lack the stability to unite.
