In spite of limited interest in the self as such, there are several other areas of psychology that make an important contribution to our inquiry into the nature of self which may be potentially useful for coaching. Some of these areas are clearly interested in the third person perspective on the self such as studies of personality. Others, studying, for example, dysfunctions of the self have an applied focus in order to develop psychotherapeutic approaches to address these dysfunctions. In these areas of psychology the first person perspective on the self is traditionally more valuable.

It is a sense of the self being 1 2 3 4 5 a single, continuous thing that is conscious of experiences, has a certain character or personality and is also an agent. To simplify this position we each perceive our self to be an operator of a complex machine (our body), which in turn acts on the environment (Fig. 1). This tiny operator sits somewhere in the brain and receives information about how the body is functioning and what is happening in the environment. He/she also has overall strategies and values according to which he/she would prefer to act.

For example, we can say that this operator has various attributes that describe a person’s character, temperament and cognitive abilities. According to these the operator may find some tasks easy and some tasks difficult to perform; he also has abilities to learn and change some of these attributes. Personality studies, for instance, suggest a range of theories and methods that allow identifying and measuring personal traits that are believed to be reasonably stable. Applied psychology in turn suggests ways to use psychometric methods in organizations for recruitment and selection purposes, for creating more compatible teams, for designing tailor-made approaches to individual development.
