The experiential exercises provided me with an opportunity to recognise my tendency towards interpreting a situation before even experiencing it on ground level. During the tree exercise I found myself trying to analyse why I had chosen to stand next to a particular tree even before taking time to really see it. It was in my nature to jump ahead to explanation mode. So it is vital for someone wanting to move from the apprentice state to the state of expertise or mastery to accept that this journey takes a very long time – it cannot be rushed, there is no quick-and-easy fix.

Normally an expert does not unduly pause to reason or deliberate. She simply and spontaneously does what normally works and, quite naturally, it usually works again. We are all experts at many tasks and our everyday coping skills function smoothly and transparently so as to free us to be aware of other aspects of our lives where we are not so skilful.
