Finally it is stated that the luminosities for the supergiants depend upon members of the Orion cluster and of h and X Persei, but it is not stated what distances were adopted for these clusters nor how these distances were determined. JOHNSON and HILTNER (1956) gave a revised calibration of the MK system. Their idea was to fit the observed cluster sequences in a colour-luminosity diagram to a single zero-age main sequence. They emphasise the necessity of fitting the observed main sequences at a sufficiently low part that one can be sure that no evolutionary effects have moved the stars from the presumed well-defined zero-age sequence.

The procedures that are valid are to make use of trigonometric parallaxes, after correcting the apparent visual magnitude of the star for interstellar absorption, and to select as standard stars those 0 and B type stars which are members of groups of stars (binaries or clusters), the distance of which have been determined independently of any assumptions about galactic structure or of the luminosities of the 0 and B stars. The relationship between parallax and visual absolute magnitude is the following: (III-2) Mv = rno + 5 + 5log 10 , where rno is the apparent magnitude of the star corrected for interstellar absorption.

From his material Petrie sets up three line-intensity ratios HeI/Hen, Hen/H, and SiIv/Hen useful for classifying 0 type spectra and he gives a revised classification for 20 stars. The variation with spectral type of the adopted ratios is shown in Figure 10. With these curves one may classify 0 type spectra accurately and consistently. The line Hen ;"4686 is not useful for classifying 0 type spectra because it frequently appears in emission in 0 type spectra due to a cycle involving the absorption of the Lyman f3 radiation of hydrogen which is produced in the outer extended atmosphere of the star.
