Borkon, Templeton and Lawson found that the separation of the colon of the dog from its mesenteric attachments did not alter its pattern of motility. It only lowered somewhat the tonus and the irritability of the muscle. Castleton in similar experiments found a slowing of the rate of rhythmic contraction. I emphasize these points not because I wish to start a childish con troversy over the relative values of different parts of the body, but because I wish to impress students with the advisability of studying the mechanisms underlying intestinal activity in the bowel itself.

It is the organ of digestion, and most of the symptoms of indigestion appear to arise in abnormalities in the motor functions of this tube. There are two main types of activity in the small bowel : one, the rhythmic segmentations and the probably closely related swaying or pendular movements, and the other, the peristaltic rushes. In some animals and in man most of the forwarding of. intestinal contents is effected by peristaltic rushes, but some part is effected by rhythmic segmentation, and some by small, slowly traveling contractions.

THE FUNCTION OF THE NERVES It must not be forgotten, however, that in the more complex ani mals, in addition to the highest type of synaptic system one finds not only the primitive nerve nets, as in the bladder, arteries, and perhaps intestine, but chemical transmitters and perhaps also a rem nant of the original protoplasmic transmission from cell to cell. Similarly, in a modern city, with all its telephones, one still finds the original messenger boy. The thing to be kept in mind is that the main function of the nervous system in all its stages of development ap pears to be that of expediting conduction.
