Example text

Throughout the book, we present stories of various people who are directly and indirectly affected by the struggle for women’s reproductive health freedom. We offer descriptions of those who work in abortion clinics and those who protest outside the clinic, lawyers who work on reproductive rights cases, women who have had abortions and those who have chosen not to, and those who have had no choice at all. Information is included that counselors and therapists will find important to include when they counsel women before they choose to have an abortion or afterward, whether their sad or guilty feelings have remained longer than most do or they just want to talk with someone who understands.

We want them to have the same choice not to have an abortion that people who do support choice have to obtain an abortion. We have no shame in saying that we are political activists. Like many of the activists we write about in this book, our goal is for everyone to have the right to make their own choices. Activists in this movement support those who have different opinions, and it is important for everyone’s opinions to be respected and honored. Our vision is a world where everyone has tolerance for the other points of view.

Depending on the wording of the law, notification or consent may have to take place in person, by mail, or by phone. In many cases it may require multiple office visits. In other cases, providers may have parents sign a form waiving the requirement of notification or consent and the associated waiting period, allowing notification or consent to take place on the day of the abortion procedure. Penalties if notification or consent is not properly executed vary state by state and may include criminal penalties, fines, or revocation of the doctor’s medical license.
