Boardlevel activities and conversations are not confined to the boardroom. The boardroom is the place where important decisions are made, but it’s not generally the place where minds are made up, arguments are put forward, or debates are conducted. The board meeting has a special legal status, but it’s usually the formal culmination of a series of decision-making events, not the event itself. “The conversations in the margins of a board meeting are vital,” says Monica. ” Pre-presentations and corridor work, water-cooler chats, canvassing, lobbying – boards couldn’t operate without these.

The same thing will happen in corporate politics. Boards have a long way to go to match the gender balance in the House of Commons (about 20 percent women, at the time of writing), but a smart company will realize that the style of its politics must change to accommodate women, and will try to eliminate questionable aspects of its power assignment system and the overtly and covertly macho aspects of its internal politics. A competitive advantage in the war for talent could be gained by a system that rewards, with assignments of more power, those employing the more diplomatic, female style of politics.
