This is my first time using your service, I'd love to find this book and have others I want to find as well if this works out! This sounds like The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Van Allsburg (the same guy who wrote and illustrated The Polar Express). John and Nancy Rambeau, The Mystery of Morgan Castle, circa 1962. Several ghostwriters wrote the books and they were published under the pseudonym of Franklin W. London: Abelard Schuman, 1960 and New York: Scott Foresman, 1960.

The kids find a diary from 1870 in the head of a cigar-store Indian, and an enciphered message in the diary eventually leads them to the coins. The book is based off of a true story that took place in the 1800s. The Hidden Treasure Mysteries are meant to inspire readers to seek the special memories and objects of their own families. I think there was a picture of a girl on a horse jumping a fence on the cover. It might also have been part of a series, but I'm not sure about that.

Arthur tells Logan that the woman who used to live in the Forbes's new house was murdered, and the killer has never been caught. It might not be this book, but have you checked out the "other" Betsy books, by Carolyn Haywood? One writes, one plays a miniature piano, and the third...might draw? (I haven't read it in years, so the details are hazy.) It's very memorable though! I think their clothes were late 19th century/early 20th century. I am searching for a book that I believe I got through the Weekly Reader Book Club around 1970.

Adult supervision is the rule rather than the exception here, so get a firm grip on your sense of humor and wade on in. He needs to get his hair cut for a birthday party (his perhaps, I can't recall) and is stalling. An endearing version that captures the charm and grace of the nativity while telling the story of a boy who gave the only present he had to the newborn King.
